Glossary - HDCD
- What is HDCD?
- High Definition Compatible Digital, or HDCD, is a patented process for delivering on CD the full richness and detail of the original microphone feed. HDCD-encoded CDs sound better because they are encoded with 20 bits of real musical information as compared with 16 bits for all other CDs. HDCD overcomes the limitation of the 16-bit CD format by using a sophisticated system to encode the additional 4 bits onto the CD while remaining completely compatible with the CD format.
- Can HDCD-encoded CDs be played on ordinary CD players?
- Yes, HDCD-encoded CDs are compatible with ordinary CD players.
- DSD
- What is DSD?
- Direct-Stream Digital is a technology developed by Philips and Sony to store audio signals on digital storage media and is used for the Super Audio Compact Disc. The signal is stored as sequence of single bit values at a very high frequency. Noise shaping and oversampling are used to reduce distortion caused by the very high quantisation of the audio signal to a single bit. Due to the high sampling rate the bandwidth and therefore the audio quality can be higher than what is possible with the 44.1 kHz PCM format used for normal audio CDs.
- Can DSD-encoded CDs be played on ordinary CD players?
- Yes, DSD-encoded CDs are compatible with ordinary CD players.
